Sida-Adoptionscentrum (Sweden) Assisted Programmes:
As all
of knows, many an abandoned child in our society,
especially the newborn ones, perishes in informal
adoptions. Not many know that there have been specific
rules and regulations, as specified by the Hon’ble
Supreme court of India with regard to adoption of
abandoned children. Besides being grave breach of the
law of the land, these types of informal adoption never
ascertain the legal status of the child in the family,
and jeopardize the future of such children, making it
insecure and bleak. Such undesired and illegal
practices are found to take place more commonly in
hospitals and nursing homes. Such practices are deep
rooted and going on since long where traces of monetary
transactions have also been found. To check abandonment
of children and their subsequent perishing

in
informal adoptions, Sanyog has availed and implemented
two projects from Swedish International Development
Agency (Sida) and Adoptionscenrum (AC) of Sweden.
The
first was a three year project which was implemented in
Cuttack and its satellite city of Choudwar. Since the
highest number of nursing homes and private clinics of
the State are in Cuttack, it was a good implementation
of the project to curb the illegal activities. It was a
counseling project to medico and police personnel for
their sensitization regarding the do’s and don’ts
regarding abandoned children. Encouraged by the success
of the project, it was extended as the second Sida-AC
supported project to five coastal districts of Cuttack,
Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Puri and Khurda with addition
of ICDS personnel, government personnel, educational
institutions, women’s organizations, youth clubs, local
elected people’s representatives, beetle shop owners,
etc. in the target group. The third Sida and AC
assisted project, which is being currently implemented,
focuses on overall development of about 100 childcare
institutions (both government recognised and non-recognised)
located in the 12 coastal districts of Orissa (Balasore,
Bhadrak, Jajpur, Denkanal, Cuttack, Kendrapara,
Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam and
Gajapati), through capacity building of their
functionaries. The objective is over all development of
the institutions as a whole which includes the all
important quality residential care for the
institutionalized children through capacity building and
skill development of functionaries at all the levels. |
